Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is reportedly set to begin shooting for the much-awaited biopic on legendary actor Madhubala in September, with Sara Arjun set to portray the iconic star. The project is expected to go on floors after Bhansali completes his ongoing film Love & War, according to reports.

The yet-to-be-titled biopic is expected to be directed by Jasmeet K Reen, known for Darlings, with Bhansali reportedly backing the project as producer. The film will explore Madhubala’s life, career and the world she inhabited during her years in Hindi cinema.

According to the reports, the first schedule is likely to be held at Royal Palms in Goregaon, Mumbai. The location is currently being used for the final song sequence of Love & War, which is expected to wrap by the end of August. Following the completion of that schedule, the production design team is reportedly expected to transform the space for the Madhubala project.

Sara Arjun has reportedly begun preparing for the challenging role. The filmmakers are said to be focusing on capturing Madhubala’s personality, mannerisms and the period in which she lived. If confirmed, the role will mark a significant opportunity for the young actor to lead a biographical film centred on one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated stars.

The Madhubala project has been in development for several years, with Jasmeet K Reen attached to the film since its original announcement in 2024. The latest reports suggest that the project is now moving closer to production.

Bhansali, meanwhile, is completing Love & War, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on January 21, 2027.
