Senior batter Virat Kohli and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah have returned to India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, while Shubman Gill has been named captain of the team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad on Sunday, with Kohli’s inclusion subject to fitness clearance.
The return of Kohli and Bumrah has strengthened India’s lineup ahead of the England challenge, with the selectors opting for a combination of experience and emerging talent. Kohli had missed the previous ODI series against Afghanistan after suffering an injury, while Bumrah returns to the 50-over setup after being managed for workload concerns.
Gill, who has taken on greater leadership responsibilities in recent assignments, will captain the side during the England ODIs. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain, adding further stability to India’s middle order. The squad also includes senior players Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, alongside youngsters who have impressed in recent outings.
One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the omission of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed batter earned praise after stepping in during Kohli’s absence and scoring a century in the final ODI against Afghanistan. However, with Kohli returning, Jaiswal has missed out on a place in the England series squad.
India’s bowling attack will receive a major boost with Bumrah’s comeback. The fast bowler is expected to lead the pace unit in English conditions, supported by players such as Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Spin options include Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
The three-match ODI series against England will begin on July 14, with matches scheduled at Edgbaston, Sophia Gardens and Lord’s. The tour will provide India with an opportunity to test their combination and prepare for upcoming international assignments.
