Cricket’s most celebrated rivalry could take centre stage more than ever after the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled a revamped format for the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, creating the possibility of India and Pakistan facing each other up to three times during the tournament. The revised structure is designed to increase competition and sustain fan interest throughout the event.
Under the new format, the two teams are expected to meet in the initial group stage if drawn together. Should both qualify, they could clash again in the newly introduced Super 7phase, where seven teams compete for four semi-final berths. A third encounter would become possible if both sides progress to the knockout rounds, including the final.
The ICC’s overhaul introduces a 14-team tournament featuring a preliminary “Super Series” to determine the final entrant into the main competition. Twelve teams will then be divided into two groups of six before advancing to the Super 7 stage, replacing the traditional progression from group matches directly to the semi-finals. Organisers say the new system aims to deliver more meaningful contests while maintaining competitive balance.
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the new format expected to reshape one of cricket’s premier global events.
