Director Imtiaz Ali’s much-awaited period romance ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ has achieved a significant financial milestone, recovering nearly 70 per cent of its production cost even before the end of its opening day in theatres. Industry sources attribute the strong pre-release recovery to the film’s robust non-theatrical deals, including satellite, digital and music rights, placing the project on a fast track toward profitability.
Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah, the film released globally on Friday amid considerable anticipation. Set against the backdrop of India’s Partition, the romantic drama marks another collaboration between Ali and Dosanjh following the success of Amar Singh Chamkila.
The early financial success comes despite the notable absence of Dosanjh from the film’s promotional campaign. Addressing the issue, Ali explained that the actor has been occupied with international concert commitments, while co-star Sharvari has been shooting abroad. The filmmaker said the team was aware of these scheduling constraints from the outset and planned promotions accordingly. Most publicity activities were therefore handled by Ali and Vedang Raina.
Speaking about the situation, Ali stressed that the actors’ absence was not a major concern and that the focus remained on the film itself. Dosanjh had earlier clarified through a video message that he was in Texas for sold-out performances and would return soon.
Backed by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga has generated strong buzz for its music by A. R. Rahman and its emotionally charged narrative. Trade analysts believe that with a large portion of costs already recovered, the film is now well-positioned to emerge as a profitable venture if box-office collections remain steady through its opening weekend.
