IPL fans are in for a treat as MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are likely to return for the blockbuster clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night. This season-defining El Clasico could decide both teams’ playoff fates, with team sources confirming the superstars’ readiness.
Dhoni, yet to play in IPL 2026, has recovered from a calf strain. He is traveling with the CSK squad, keeping wickets and batting in training sessions. This will be his first match of the season, a big boost after Ayush Mhatre’s injury upset team balance. Wankhede holds special memories for him, where he hit the winning six in India’s 2011 World Cup final.
CSK are in trouble after a 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. They have just two wins from six matches. Another defeat means they must win six of their last seven games to reach playoffs, as eight wins are usually needed.
MI come with momentum from a 99-run win over Gujarat Titans, improving their net run rate. But they missed Rohit at the top, losing three wickets in the powerplay during that game. Rohit hurt his hamstring against Royal Challengers Bengaluru but is expected back to stabilize the batting.
Both five-time champions sit with 2 wins in 6 games, MI slightly ahead on net run rate. MI lead head-to-head 21-18. Tickets sold out fast, with CSK fans traveling to see Dhoni. This rivalry match is now a survival battle.
