Asha Bhosle cremated with State honours in Mumbai

India mourns the loss of legendary singer Asha Bhosle. She was cremated in Mumbai with full state honours on April 13. Thousands gathered to pay their last respects to the iconic voice of Indian music.

Asha Bhosle’s funeral took place at Shivaji Park crematorium at 4 pm. The hearse carrying her body moved from her Lower Parel home to the crematorium. It was adorned with white and yellow flowers and a large photo of her in a traditional Maharashtrian nath.

Fans lined the streets as the cortege passed. Earlier, people could view her body at her residence. Her body came from Breach Candy Hospital in a glass casket draped in the Indian tricolour.

Family members like son Anand Bhosle, sister Usha Mangeshkar, and brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar attended the last rites. Singers Anup Jalota and Shaan sang at the funeral.

Celebrities including Aamir Khan, AR Rahman, Sachin Tendulkar, Ranveer Singh, Jackie Shroff, Riteish Deshmukh, and Helen came to honour her. A police salute marked the state honours.

Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday due to multi-organ failure after battling health issues. Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, she debuted in 1943 with the Marathi song Chala Chala Nav Bala from Majha Bal.

She sang timeless hits like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dum Maro Dum, Dil Cheez Kya Hai, and Chura Liya Hai Tumne. Her work with RD Burman, whom she married, is legendary. She won two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000, and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Asha Bhosle’s music touched generations over eight decades. Her death leaves a void in Indian music.
