Chennai Super Kings suffered a heavy 43-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL 2026 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. RCB posted a massive 250/3 in 20 overs, their third-highest total in IPL history and the highest ever against CSK, before restricting CSK to 207 all out in 19.4 overs.
Tim David’s explosive 70 off 25 balls, along with fine knocks from Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal, powered RCB to the big score. Suyash Sharma took 1/21 in four overs, while Krunal Pandya claimed 2/36 in three overs to choke CSK in the middle phase. Jamie Overton fought back with 37, but CSK’s top order crumbled, losing three wickets in the first three overs.
This loss marks CSK’s third successive defeat, leaving them winless and at the bottom of the points table with zero points. Defending champions RCB, meanwhile, grabbed four points and top spot with a net run rate of +2.501 after their second straight win.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin sounded the alarm on CSK’s woes. “The way to go upwards is to get a good work ethic going,” he said, stressing that talent needs support, confidence, and clear roles. Ashwin noted unusual decision-making: “All of this does not happen in the CSK that I know.” He highlighted tactical concerns after the RCB thrashing.
Ex-India coach Anil Kumble urged quick fixes, saying senior players must step up. “Need to tighten things up quickly,” he warned of the “extremely deflating” slide under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK’s poor start raises big questions on leadership and bowling in the post-Dhoni era. With pressure mounting, they must rebound fast or risk missing playoffs in a season of high stakes.
