Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has a clear message for India ahead of their key T20 World Cup match. He says the team must pick its best 11 players and stick with them. Overthinking match-ups could end their hopes early.
India suffered a big 76-run loss to South Africa in the Super 8 stage. They chose Washington Sundar over Axar Patel to face left-hand batters. But South Africa posted 187/7, and India folded for 111. Now, they face Zimbabwe in Chennai on February 26.
Ponting spoke on The ICC Review. He questioned dropping Axar just for left-handers. “There are right-handers too. It comes down to the captain using bowlers well,” he said. He wants coach Gautam Gambhir to keep things simple.
For Chennai’s spin-friendly pitch, Ponting suggests changes. Bring back Axar Patel for balance and experience. Add wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav too. Kuldeep troubles both left and right-handers with his googly and spin.
Ponting admits an extra spinner might hurt batting depth. But he says if the top seven fail, one more batter won’t save the day. “Pick your best XI and back them. Keep energy light,” he added. Former coach Ravi Shastri agrees Axar adds vital bowling options.
India’s semi-final spot is at risk. Ponting’s advice is simple: Go back to basics. Trust the core group and play fearless cricket. Fans hope Gambhir listens before it’s too late.
