Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has officially earned his Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-certified drone pilot licence after completing intensive training at Garuda Aerospace’s DGCA-approved centre in Chennai, announced both the company and Dhoni via social media on Tuesday, October 8.
Garuda Aerospace, one of India’s leading drone manufacturers, confirmed that Dhoni—who is also their brand ambassador and investor—underwent the required drone piloting course at their Remote Pilot Training Organisation. The firm’s founder and CEO, Agnishwar Jayaprakash, hailed the achievement as a monumental milestone, praising Dhoni’s quick grasp of the technology and strong dedication during the certification process. Jayaprakash stressed that Dhoni’s certification and enthusiasm for drone technology are significant motivators for the current generation of aspiring pilots and reinforce Garuda Aerospace’s commitment to skill and innovation.
With over 2,500 pilots trained at its Chennai centre, Garuda Aerospace highlighted Dhoni’s involvement as validation of its mission to revolutionise India’s drone ecosystem. Dhoni’s love for machines is well documented, extending from his interest in vintage automobiles and motorcycles to his hands-on approach with agricultural equipment on his Ranchi farmhouse.
Since stepping back from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has channelled his energies into diverse interests, including farming, golf and supporting new technologies. He previously earned the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army’s Parachute Regiment and completed paratrooper training. More recently, his engagement as a qualified drone pilot underscores his constant pursuit of learning and passion for innovation both on and off the sports field.
