Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher recently made his directorial debut with the movie Tanvi the Great. The movie despite having a premier at Cannes Film Festival and getting good reviews from movie legends like Robert De Niro, tanked at the Box office clashing with the soaring Saiyaara.

Anupam Kher in an interview shared how the movie failing at the box office after a clash with Saiyaara took a toll on him mentally. He revealed that he was depressed when the film didn’t work out as he had spent 4 years on this film and there were around 200 people who worked on the film

“I worked for four years on this film, one year of writing, one year of music. I wrote and directed the film. We released the film on the same day when Yash Raj Films’ Saiyaara was releasing and it got completely wiped out. It depressed me. It made me feel very sad, not just for myself, but for the new actor, whom I took from my acting school, and almost 200 people worked on the film,” he said.

He gave credit to Saiyaara and stated that it was normal for people to go see a love story as it had not been done for a while. But what distressed him was that ‘Tanvi the Great’ was released from a lot of theatres and ended up failing at the big screens.

“Everything was going fine, but the world wanted to see a love story, and rightfully so. Young, teenage love stories had not come for a long time and the system here is that even if you’re releasing the film in 400 theatres, if the other film is doing very well, they will remove your film. So it was a failure which was very heartbreaking for me,” Anupam admitted.
