Two days after all Indigo services to Nepal’s capital Kathmandu were suspended, the airline has announced today, on September 11th, that they will be resuming daily flights to the capital. It was reported that the airline will also be operating two special relief flights that will be tasked to bring nationals back to India, after government approval. To secure easy travels for people stuck in Nepal, the relief flights will be offered at special fares.
The airline announced through their official social media handle, stating that, “Starting September 11, IndiGo shall resume four daily scheduled flights to and from Kathmandu. In addition, subject to regulatory approvals, two special relief flights will operate the same day, dedicated to bringing our customers home safely.”
After the airports of Kathmandu were finally opened after the protests in Nepal, the central government of India had arranged additional flights to the capital cities on Wednesday and Thursday. The government had advised the airlines to cut down their fares and keep them at reasonable levels so that the Indian nationals could return from the chaotic conditions in Nepal.
The protests in Nepal, led largely by Gen Z, ignited after the Government of Nepal had imposed a ban on 26 social media platforms which included the likes of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X. This caused massive unrest across the nation on September 8th which resulted in the death of at least 19 people and injured over hundreds across Nepal. In Kathmandu alone, 18 protesters, many students in school and college uniforms, lost their lives, and over 300 others were left seriously injured.
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, as a result of the protest handed over his resignation on Tuesday, after his private residence was set on fire. Oli alleged that the protests by the youth against the social media ban had resulted in the loss of lives of citizens.
