This Thursday, on September 11th, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India had issued an advisory for the Indian nationals to not join the Russian Army. The ministry has asked them to deal with caution after there were reports that several Indians who had travelled to Moscow were being pushed into combat roles in the Ukraine war.
“We have seen reports about Indian nationals having been recruited recently into the Russian army. The government has on several occasions over the past one year underlined the risks and dangers inherent in this course of action and cautioned Indian citizens accordingly,” the MEA said in a statement.
The ministry has confirmed that they are also getting in contact with Russian personnel both present in Moscow and deployed in Delhi. They have raised the issue in front of the authorities and have asked them to end this practice and return their nationals safely. “We are also in touch with the families of the affected Indian citizens,” it further added.
Reiterating its caution, the MEA urged Indian citizens to avoid such offers at all costs as it is an offer that is filled with danger and could have serious implications.
“We once again strongly urge all Indian nationals to stay away from any offers to join the Russian army as this is a course fraught with danger,” the Ministry stated.
The advisory issued by the MEA was followed by a report which stated that two Indian men were allegedly lured to Russia on the promise of construction jobs but were instead deployed on the frontline in their war against Ukraine. It was reported that the two Indian nations are currently in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
The two even contacted India , currently in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, over the phone from Selydove, a town captured by Russia in November 2024. They claimed that at least 13 more Indians were trapped in similar conditions.
