In a historic move, Women in Film (WIF) India, supported by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, launched the country’s first-ever women-led delegation to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Thursday. This pioneering initiative marks a significant step in promoting gender diversity in Indian cinema’s global presence.

Facilitated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and backed by Waves Bazaar—the ministry’s flagship global markets platform—the call for participation drew over 200 applications within a week. After a rigorous selection process, six women-led projects have been chosen to represent India at TIFF, which commenced today and runs through September 9.

The selected films and their directors are Arshaly Jose with “A Dandelion’s Dream,” Deepa Bhatia’s “Rabbit Hole,” Katyayani Kumar’s “Sons of The River,” Madhumita Sundararaman’s “The Guest House,” Paromita Dhar’s “Ulta,” and Pramati Anand’s “A Late Autumn Dream.” Each project features women in key creative roles, underscoring a growing emphasis on female leadership in filmmaking.

Women in Film India, a chapter of the global network dedicated to advancing women’s careers in the screen industries, aims to mentor and build international opportunities for women filmmakers. The final selection was entrusted to an esteemed international jury comprising producers, cultural leaders, and industry experts, whose backgrounds include Academy Award-winning films and advocacy for women in cinema.

This initiative not only spotlights women filmmakers but also bolsters India’s representation on prestigious international platforms, fostering inclusivity and diversity in global cinema.
