There was a huge controversy when Shreyas Iyer’s name was omitted from the Indian squad selected for the Asia Cup 2025. Many former players, critics and fans showed their disappointment on Iyer getting snubbed off the squad. However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has blasted South Africa’s AB de Villiers for his remarks on the whole situation.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers speculated that there might be some behind the scenes stuff going on as Iyer has performed exceptionally well to be omitted from the squad. He hinted at some ego clashes being the reason behind Iyer’s snub from the Indian team.
Gavaskar, however, called it baffling that a foreign cricketer is commenting on Indian cricket’s internal situation and stated that it is none of his business. He said that they should be concerned about their own country’s cricket as according to him they hardly comment on their own team’s selection. The little mister highlighted that we never see an ex-Indian cricketer commenting on the selections of any other teams and that should be reciprocated.
“What is baffling, though, is that foreigners with no stake in Indian cricket and little knowledge about it wade into the debate, adding fuel to the fire. However great they may be as players and however many times they may have been to India, the selection of the Indian team is strictly none of their business. They should focus on their country’s cricket and let us Indians worry about our cricket. Amazingly, when their country’s teams are selected, there’s hardly anything, if ever, heard from them about the selection,” Gavaskar wrote in his column.
“It’s almost as if the selection is perfect and they have no comments to make. So why butt your nose into the selection of the Indian team? Have you ever heard Indian ex-cricketers talk about the selection of other countries’ teams? No, we mind our own business and seriously couldn’t be bothered by who they choose or who they don’t select,” he added.
