The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved India’s official bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The decision includes authorisation for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement and providing grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government if the bid succeeds.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has been tasked with submitting India’s proposal, along with securing guarantees from various ministries and authorities to ensure smooth preparations. Should the bid be accepted, Ahmedabad will become the official host city, utilising existing world-class facilities such as the Narendra Modi Stadium, venue of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.

The Games are expected to feature athletes from 72 nations and territories, making it one of the largest multi-sport events hosted by India. Officials project a major international presence, including athletes, officials, tourists and media representatives. This influx is anticipated to generate revenue, boost the hospitality sector, and create significant business opportunities for local enterprises.

Employment generation is also central to the plan. Jobs are expected across sports science, logistics, transport, event management, broadcasting, IT, communications, and public relations. Beyond direct economic benefits, the government highlighted the cultural and social impact of hosting the CWG.

In its statement, the Press Information Bureau emphasised that hosting the Games would inspire millions of young athletes, foster national pride, and strengthen India’s global sporting reputation.

If successful, the 2030 CWG will mark a landmark moment in India’s sports history.
