Clemson University has appointed Ramesh Jeganathan chair of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences (FNPS), marking a new leadership chapter for one of the University’s most interdisciplinary and impactful departments.
Coming to Clemson from Auburn University, Jeganathan brings more than 25 years of academic and leadership experience to the role, including positions as the Bruno Endowed professor of nutrition, graduate program director, interim co-associate dean for research and graduate studies and Southeastern Conference provost fellow.
“I am honored and humbled to serve as chair of FNPS,” Jeganathan said. “Clemson’s mission as a land-grant institution—integrating education, research and outreach—closely aligns with my professional values. This is a meaningful opportunity to lead a department that connects science and industry to impact communities positively.”
Jeganathan’s leadership philosophy centers on collaboration, transparency and shared governance. His initial focus will be listening and learning from faculty, staff, students and administrators to build strong, trusting relationships and understand the department’s culture and aspirations.
Among Jeganathan’s priorities are:
- Supporting faculty development and mentorship
- Strengthening the department’s research enterprise
- Enhancing student success
- Expanding graduate programs
- Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration
- Growing partnerships with industry, government and alumni
“I am committed to creating a thriving academic environment that elevates FNPS’s visibility, impact and external funding,” he said. “Mentorship is a cornerstone of my leadership, and I will continue to support students and faculty in achieving their professional goals.”
Jeganathan also emphasized the importance of inclusivity and respect in the workplace, recognizing staff’s vital role in the department’s success.
“I see this as a special opportunity to build on a strong foundation while embracing new possibilities for growth and greater impact,” he added. “It is truly a privilege to be part of this journey. Go Tigers!”
Matthew “Matt” Holt, dean of Clemson’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, said Jeganathan’s extensive background in academic leadership, strategic planning and securing competitive research funding puts him in an excellent position to guide FNPS into a future of innovation and excellence.
“We are thrilled to announce Dr. Ramesh Jeganathan as the new chair of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences,” Holt said.
