AIIMS across India witness resignations of 429 doctors in two years

There is a huge exodus from the Indian medical college sector as doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been resigning all across the country and many of them are switching to private sectors. The number of doctors from AIIMS that have resigned has risen to 429 from 20 different institutes in the span of two years 2022-2024.

The data shown by the government revealed that around 52 – resigned from AIIMS Delhi, which is the parent institution and is considered the most prestigious of all AIIMS. Then there were 38 resignations seen at AIIMS Rishikesh, 35 at AIIMS Raipur, 32 at AIIMS Bilaspur and 30 at AIIMS Mangalagiri. These resignations have come at a catastrophic time where the institution is going through a faculty/doctor crisis.

It was also revealed that the numbers state that nearly one out of three faculty positions in the institution was vacant in 20 institutions including the esteemed AIIMS Delhi. There’s also a provision that was discussed in the Parliament concerning the hiring of retired faculty members on contract basis at the post of Professor under the age of 70.

A senior doctor from AIIMS who recently joined the private sector stated the reason for this shift from AIIMS to private sectors. He revealed that over the past few years doctors have complained about the lack of protected time to carry out research. This has caused brain drain to many of them leading them to switching jobs.

“Over the last few years, focus has shifted towards improving the services and often we receive complaints about the lack of ‘protected time’ to carry out research, which is an important reason for the brain drain,” he said.
