Amit Shah has added another feather in his hat as he has become the longest serving Union Minister of Home Affairs this Tuesday. On August 5th, Mr. Amit Shah completed 2,258 days in office, he assumed the Home Minister’s office on May 30, 2019 and has served the country ever since.
On such a huge achievement of Mr. Shah, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised him for becoming the longest-serving home minister during the Parliamentary meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Earlier today, the leaders of the ruling alliance, NDA, held a meeting at the Parliament Library Building (PLB). The meeting was held while there was a deadlock in the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament.
Amit Shah surpassed the long held record by one of the biggest and most influential leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Lal Krishna Advani and respected Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant. Mr. Advani held the position from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004 for 2,256 days. Whereas Mr. Pant served at the position from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, totalling 6 years and 56 days.
Amit Shah has been in the office since May 30, 2019, and has completed 2,258 days in office as of August 4, 2025. The milestone in home minister Shah’s tenure comes on August 5, the date he must remember very well as he announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019 that ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
