The Indian Military’s defence system just got a bit more upgraded as it was reported that this Wednesday, on July 16th, the Indian Army tested their Akash Prime air defence system at over 15,000 feet in the Ladakh sector. The officials have confirmed that the tests carried out were successful thus enhancing the country’s defence prowess.

As per the reports, the air defence system was tested in the presence of several officials from the Army Air Defence and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The information on the trials revealed that the surface-to-air missiles scored two direct hits on fast-moving target aircraft in a high-altitude zone with thin air.

The Akash Air Defence Systems were one of India’s major lines of defence when the country was in a major tussle with Pakistan. The defence systems were interjecting Pakistan’s Chinese aircrafts and Turkish drones. Now, India has added Akash Prime to their line of defence. Akash Prime is the third and fourth regiment of the Akash air defence systems in the Indian army.

The Akash missile system was developed 16 years back in 2009, since then it has been constantly upgraded depending upon the operational needs of the Indian Armed Forces. The Akash missile system consists of various differences which are equipped with different specifications for different conditional battles.

The different variants of the Akash missile systems include the original Akash Mark-I, the Akash-IS that is equipped with an indigenous seeker, the Akash Prime designed for high altitude and low temperature combat, and the Akash-NG, that is equipped with more advanced features and provides a longer range than the other missile systems in India.
