This Thursday, July 10th, it was announced that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of Nimisha Priya on the coming Monday, July 14th. The Court has also asked the Central Government to inform them of any steps they might have taken in the Kerala nurse case.
Nimisha Priya is currently in Yemen and is due to be executed there on this Wednesday, July 16th after being convicted in a murder case. There was a petition for Nimisha Priya by the International Action Council asking for the Supreme Court’s intervention in this matter.
Now a bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi has agreed to an urgent hearing of this matter. The court has also asked Senior Advocate Ragenth Basant, who appeared for the council, to provide a copy of the petition to the Attorney General of India.
The bench consisting of both the judges has stated, “Considering the nature and urgency of the case, we request Union of India or Central Government to apprise this court through the Attorney General as to the steps taken in this case by the government, if any.”
Senior Advocate Basant, as per the reports, have stated that as per the Sharia law there is still an option of paying blood money to the family in order to secure a pardon. He has also asked the Central Government to intervene in the matter and conduct negotiations with Yemen to save Nimisha Priya.
Priya has been in Yemen since 2008 and was working as a nurse in the country. She was convicted for murdering a person by overdose of sedation and then disposing of his dead body with the help of a fellow nurse Hannan. Both nurses chopped off the dead body and dumped it in a water tank. Priya is due to be executed for murder on July 16th.
