The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s 10th and latest Sustainable Development Report (SDR) which was published this Tuesday on 24th June, has brought some good news for India. For the first time ever India is listed amongst the top 100 out of the 193 countries for the progress they have made in achieving the SDGs.
According to the report India has scored 67 points on the SDG Index of 2025 and has ranked 99th on it. Other world leaders like China and the United States are ranked higher at 49th and 44th positions respectively. On the SDG Index, China scored 74.4 points and the USA scored 75.2 points.
Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan, the neighboring countries of the nation, are ranked higher than India on the index. Nepal is at 85th place in the index with 68.6 points and Bhutan is on the 74th spot with 70.5 points. Maldives was ranked 53rd while Sri Lanka was placed on the 93rd spot. Other neighbors like Bangladesh and Pakistan are ranked at 114th and 140th position respectively with Bangladesh scoring 63.9 points and Pakistan getting 57 points.
The leading author of the report was Jaffrey Sachs who is a world-renowned economist. He said, “Conflicts, structural vulnerabilities and limited fiscal space impede SDG progress in many parts of the world.” The authors of the reports have also stated that the SDG progress has slowed down in recent times. Only 17 percent of the total 17 targets adopted by the members of the United Nations in 2015 have progressed while they were projected to be achieved by 2030.
The SDG Index continues to be dominated by the countries based in Europe. Out of the top 20 just 1 country is based out of Europe. The Nordic nations especially are at the very top of the index with Finland ranking first, Sweden second and Denmark third on the list.
