Mirzapur: The Movie opened in theatres on Friday amid strong anticipation, with the Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu and Ravi Kishan-starrer targeting a potential ₹25-crore net opening in India. With the Janmashtami holiday expected to boost footfalls and strong audience interest, the film could move closer to the ₹30-crore mark if positive word of mouth builds.

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film brings the popular Mirzapur universe from streaming to the big screen. Rather than continuing directly from the series finale, the movie explores a previously untold story set in 2018, between Episodes 6 and 7 of the first season. This timeline allows several familiar characters to return.

Tripathi reprises his role as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi. Shweta Tripathi Sharma returns as Golu Gupta, with Ravi Kishan, Jitendra Kumar and Abhishek Banerjee among the other prominent cast members.

Advance bookings had already indicated substantial interest before release, with early ticket sales crossing ₹12 crore, raising expectations of a double-digit opening. The film is also positioned to challenge recent Hindi box-office performers, including Awarapan 2, which opened at around ₹22 crore.

The Central Board of Film Certification has given the film an ‘A’ certificate. The movie has a reported runtime of 3 hours and 17 minutes.

Early audience reactions have been broadly positive about the performances, particularly those of Pankaj Tripathi, Ravi Kishan and Divyenndu, although some viewers have raised concerns about pacing and excessive exposition.

The film’s opening weekend will ultimately depend on audience word of mouth and whether the franchise’s established streaming following translates into sustained theatrical attendance.
