The curtains are slowly closing on the international careers of Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and with each passing series the speculations on their retirement grow stronger. Some reports have come out that this Australia tour will be their last time touring the country for a three match ODI series.
Talking about the big summer that is up in the charts for Australian Cricket, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg shared his excitement for the upcoming ODI series against India in October and November. He talked about how this could be the last time Virat and Rohit would be touring Australia and he wants them to get a proper send-off and acknowledge their greatness.
Greenberg said, “This might be a summer like we’ve never seen before, just in terms of the amount of content. And if you think about the quality of the players coming, particularly from India — this might be the last time we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. If that’s the case — who knows, it might not be — but if it is, we want to make sure we give them a great send-off and acknowledge the incredible contribution they’ve made to international cricket.”
He also stated how it will be the first time in nearly two decades that all the capital cities in territories across the entire country will have international matches. This will rake in huge numbers throughout the summer and will be a logistics boon for the cricket board.
Greenberg stated, “I think we saw real momentum last year on the back of the Border Gavaskar Trophy series — you know, some record-breaking ticket sales. And I anticipate that we’ll see a number of sellouts across the summer, really starting in August and going through until March.”
Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket last month days before the squad for India tour of England for a 5-match Test series was to be announced. Both legendary players have shared the dressing room since the start of their careers and have already retired from two formats of the game.
