A news that has been circulating on the internet stating that the government will be discontinuing the 500 rupees note by the year 2026, has caused a slight panic in the people. After the public was shaken by the demonetisation in November 2016, people have been very anxious of any such news. But they can be relieved now as the centre has debunked the news as completely fake.

The Press Information Bureau of India’s fact checking division has debunked the news for the general public ending their state of panic. The PIB Fact Check department posted through their official social media account denying the credibility of any such news. They also stated that the Reserve Bank of India has not made any announcement regarding the matter.

The whole news started from a misleading YouTube channel that goes by the name of Capital TV.  The channel posted a video on their YouTube channel that claimed that the RBI will be discontinuing its Rs. 500 notes by March next year in 2026. The fact check department deemed this statement as false and just a misinformation that was spread by the YouTube channel.

Their post read, “A YouTube video on the YT Channel ‘CAPITAL TV’ (capitaltvind) falsely claims that the RBI will discontinue the circulation of ₹500 notes by March 2026. The Reserve Bank of India has made NO such announcement. Rs. 500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender. Don’t fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it!”

The government introduced the new Rs. 500 notes alongside the new Rs. 2000 note in November 2016 after PM Narendra Modi announced demonetisation. The Rs. 2000 note however was withdrawn from circulation, but it still remained legal tender.
