At this year’s New York Indian Film Festival, Tanvi the Great, an inspiring film directed by Indian cinema icon Anupam Kher, will make its North American premiere.
On June 19, the movie will be shown in New York City. It made its premiere at the Cannes last month. Shubhangi, Kher, Iain Glen, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Boman Irani, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, and Nasser are among the prominent actors in the movie.
After the NYIFF screening, Anupam Kher and actress Shubhangi will have an onstage discussion.
An emphatic Kher stated, “It is a matter of great honour for me and my team that Tanvi The Great will have its gala premiere at the prestigious New York Indian Film Festival. The festival has long championed not just cinematic brilliance, but stories that hold a mirror to society. After the overwhelming response in Cannes and London, we now look forward to sharing our story with the passionate and thoughtful audiences of this incredible city.”
The movie is about a young autistic woman who, in spite of every possible problem, decides to reach the highest battlefield in the world—a purpose her late father was never able to accomplish. The film, which was inspired by Kher’s niece and has a sound design by Resul Pookutty and a score by M.M. Keeravani, is described as a very personal and poignant depiction of resiliency.
“Tanvi the Great is a powerful and inspiring film that reaffirms the transformative power of storytelling. We are especially proud to spotlight the legendary Anupam Kher — now Director and Producer — whose performance once again reminds us why he is among the greatest actors of our time, commanding not only the screen but also our hearts. His presence at NYIFF is a gift to our audiences and a celebration of artistic excellence. Through premieres like this, NYIFF continues to champion bold and resonant Indian cinema on a global stage,” explained Rakesh Kaul, Vice Chairman of the Indo-American Arts Council.
During, June 20–22, 2025, the New York Indian Film Festival in its 25th edition will be hosting the screening at the Village East by Angelika in Manhattan.
