The Electric Vehicles market is booming in India and the government has noticed the surging markets. The central government has notified final guidelines of its flagship EV policy and are looking to lure global car producers to manufacture their cars in India and take forward the Make in India scheme. But despite the new guidelines Tesla Inc. won’t be coming to India anytime soon.
Heavy Industries Minister, HD Kumaraswamy held a press conference on Monday talking about the companies that are looking forward to manufacturing electric vehicles in India. He said, “Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen-Skoda and Hyundai motor co. have already shown interest.” However, he also added, “Tesla… only wants to start two showrooms, they are not interested in manufacturing in India.”
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. had come out and stated that they have been keeping a close eye on the developments on the EV market policies of the Indian government. They have stated that according to the further steps taken in the policies it will take a decision and decide the long-term strategy for the company to move further in India’s growing market.
Mercedes-Benz have not given any official statements from their end and have refused to react to the notice as of now. Hyundai Motor Co. have been sent an email as of now and haven’t responded to it.
The EV scheme of the government cuts down the import duty to 15% from 110% for EVs with cost, insurance and freight value of $35,000 or more. The scheme also states that the car manufacturers must invest a minimum of ₹4,150 crore to establish a production facility for new electric vehicles (EV) in India within a span of three years.
