India’s World Champion Chess star, D Gukesh had an amazing victory against the former world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in the round 6 of the Norway Chess Tournament 2025. The game between the two had made headlines after Carlsen’s unexpected post-match crash out. The Norwegian player was upset by his loss and banged the table in frustration which sent some of the pieces to fall from the table.

The official social media account of Norway Chess posted the video of the winning moment of Gukesh. The video shows the immediate crash out of the Norwegian great after Gukesh seals the game. Carlsen banged the table out of frustration and let his emotions get the better of him but did not forget to show respect to his opponent. He shook Gukesh’s hand and then patted his back before leaving the room.

Gukesh was asked about his reaction to Magnus’ shocking reaction to which he agreed and said that he understood the feeling. He related with the chess savant and said, “I have also banged a lot of tables in my career.”

After the match, Gukesh also looked pretty surprised by the victory. When he was asked about why that was the case, Gukesh explained that he thought he didn’t perform as per his expectations. He believes that he just got lucky and would lose 99 out of 100 times. He stated, “I mean, [it was] not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I will take it.”

Gukesh’s coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna was asked for his reaction to the upset victory. He said, “We have to give a lot of credit to Gukesh for his stubbornness and his resourcefulness because I think he was aware that he was dead lost for so long, yet he kept kicking, he kept kicking, and the time went lower, the more chances he had to actually do something with the position. I do not think he intended to win that, but I am sure he is happy.”

Gukesh made history with this win as this was the first time he defeated the Norwegian Grandmaster in classical chess and became the only second Indian ever to win a game against Carlsen in this tournament after Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
