Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are officially out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoff contention following their four-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on Wednesday.
The star of the match was PBKS wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked up his second hat-trick in the IPL history while playing against CSK. The power dynamic for CSK’s quickly shifted after PBKS spinner picked up four wickets in his third over. Falling prey to the bowler’s fiery strikes were Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmed. He finished with figures of 4/32 in three overs as CSK got all out for 190 in 19.2 overs.
It should be noted that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB, 14) and Punjab Kings (PBKS, 13), have already secured more than 12 points on the IPL scoreboard. Meanwhile, three others — Mumbai Indians (MI), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Delhi Capitals (DC) — have 12 points each in their names.
Standing at the bottom of the IPL table, CSK has four matches to play with a possibility of scoring a total of 12 points. The score, however, will not be enough to contend in the game any further.
As the five-time champions of the cash-rich league, it is CSK’s first time departing from the IPL group stages.
