Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off a walkathon from the Vidhan Sabha to pay tributes to Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary.

Speaking at the event, the chief minister said the Delhi government is committed to working in line with Dr Ambedkar’s principles to ensure equality, access to quality education and healthcare for every citizen. Gupta said Babasaheb’s teachings “are not just meant to be remembered, they are meant to be lived”.

While announcing 15-day celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti in the government schools, Gupta said, “Special assembly sessions will now be held in all Delhi schools to educate students about Babasaheb Ambedkar’s life, struggles, and contributions. The Delhi government is fully committed to implementing equality, education, and health rights on the ground,” she asserted. She also thanked Prime Narendra Modi “for declaring Ambedkar Jayanti a national holiday”.

Addressing the gathering, the CM said, “The ‘Walkathon’ is not just a symbolic march but a powerful medium to spread Babasaheb’s message of justice, equality, and rights to every citizen.”

She concluded by saying, “His Jayanti is not just celebrated in India, but globally, as a festival of equality and justice. He can rightly be called the ‘Architect of Modern India’. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s foresight gave India a constitution that is unmatched in its inclusiveness and strength. Thanks to Babasaheb, 1.4 billion Indians today live under the same Constitution, enjoying equal rights and duties.”

The event, organised by the Delhi government, saw the participation of hundreds of schoolchildren. Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated on April 14 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. The function was also attended by Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Raj Singh and Education Minister Ashish Sood, among others.
