The Gujarat government has enlisted Singapore-based Surbana Jurong to oversee the development of the last three phases of the Sabarmati Riverfront project. This ambitious undertaking, spanning Gandhinagar and parts of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), aims to transform the riverfront into a world-class urban space.
Surbana Jurong, owned by Temasek Holdings, Singapore’s investment arm, will prepare the master plan for phases four to six of the project. These phases cover 16.5 km from Narmada Main Canal to Chiloda Bridge and are estimated to cost Rs. 3,300 crore. The firm’s expertise includes successful riverfront projects such as China’s Han Cheng Ju Shui development.
The Sabarmati Riverfront project began in 1997 under the Special Purpose Vehicle Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL). Phase 1, inaugurated in 2009, reclaimed 204 hectares of land and introduced promenades, parks, and iconic structures like Atal Bridge. Phase 2 expanded the riverfront by 11 km and incorporated green belts, recreational facilities, and sports infrastructure.
Phases four to six will extend the riverfront’s total length to 38 km across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts. Plans include promenades with layered landscaping for unobstructed river views, international parks showcasing global flora, and advanced ferry services. The development also emphasizes sustainability through extensive tree plantations.
The collaboration with Surbana Jurong reflects Gujarat’s commitment to innovation in urban planning. “Hiring new agencies brings fresh ideas,” noted a government official. Construction is set to begin once foundational work by state agencies is completed.
