The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA-Chicago) hosted a grand celebration of India’s 76th Republic Day on January 25, 2025, at the Ashyana Banquets. Over 500 guests attended the sold-out event, immersing the venue with patriotic fervor and cultural pride. The evening marked a grand debut for Anu Malhotra as FIA’s President for 2025, who flawlessly led the proceedings, delivering an event that will be remembered for years to come.
The evening began with a heartwarming melodic flute recital by Raju Bankapur during the cocktail hours, setting a serene and patriotic tone for the night. Guests were moved by the soulful notes, which echoed India’s rich cultural heritage and filled the air with nostalgia and pride. The program commenced with a welcome address by President Anu Malhotra, setting an inspiring tone for the spirit of unity and pride in Indian heritage. This was followed by a divine Ganesh Vandana dance performance by Aashna, invoking blessings for the evening ahead. The audience then stood in unison as the National Anthem of India and the United States, filled the hall with pride and reverence.
The cultural program continued with a patriotic group dance by Ghungroo Performing Arts, a tribute to India’s vibrant heritage. FIA Founder and Chairman, Sunil Shah, then addressed the gathering, sharing the organization’s journey and vision. In a proud moment, Sunil Shah, Vinita Gulabani, and Hitesh Gandhi officially introduced Anu Malhotra as the President for 2025, heralding a new chapter of FIA’s impactful leadership.
The distinguished Consulate General of India, Somnath Ghosh, and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi took the stage, delivering stirring speeches that highlighted the Indian-American community’s achievements and contributions. A ceremonial lamp lighting ceremony, symbolizing hope and prosperity, added an auspicious touch to the celebrations.
The event was graced by an illustrious lineup of dignitaries, including, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, State Representative Michelle Mussman, Mayor Larry Herman, Mayor Rodney Craig, Mayor Tom Dailly, Commissioner Kevin Morrison, Alderwoman Swetha Baid, Nimish Jani, Chintan Patel, Dr Parag Doshi. Dr Sreenivas Reddy, Dinesh Thakkar & Pinky Thakkar, Dr Dilip Shah, Ajeet Singh, Nag Jaiswal, Harjinder Khaira, J P Khaira, Gulzar Singh, Meghna Bansal, Asha Oroskar, Harish Kolsani, Pradeep Shukla, Dr Suresh Reddy, and Lakhvir Sahota. Their presence added prestige to the occasion, reaffirming the significance of FIA’s work in fostering community spirit.
The cultural extravaganza continued with a mesmerizing group dance by the Shilzar Dance Company, followed by one of the evening’s key highlights—the FIA Scholarship Awards ceremony. Led by Chandini Duvvuri and Vinita Gulabani, five outstanding students were recognized for their academic achievements and community service. Nag Jaiswal and Meghna Bansal shared heartfelt words, encouraging the youth to pursue their dreams with determination and excellence.
Adding to the accolades, service and media awards were presented, honoring individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to the community. Awards were given to Neha Sobti, A3N Media, and Outland Media. Awards of Appreciation were presented to Dr. Parag Doshi, Dinesh and Pinky Thakkar, Anu and Bharat Malhotra, Harry Mohan, Chintan Patel, Shrujal Patel, Dr. Asha and Dr. Anil Oroskar, and Dr. Vishwabharathy Ganesan. Special service award was presented to FIA Secretary General Nilabh Dubey for his tireless service and contributions in all the events.
The patriotic spirit soared as Payel Roy Ganguly and her group performed a melodious patriotic song, followed by a vibrant dance performance by Neha Sobti’s troupe. Dinner was announced and guests were treated to a spectacular dance by Fal Rana’s group during the dinner break, ensuring the energy and celebration continued unabated.
The evening transitioned seamlessly into a soul-stirring Ghazal program, a musical journey of timeless melodies. Quincy Chett and Payel Roy Ganguly, accompanied by talented musicians, captivated the audience with an exquisite repertoire of ghazals and romantic songs. Some of the standout performances included; Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar Aaj Bhi Hai, Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar, Tujhse Naraz Nahin Zindagi, Koi Faryad, Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho, Tu Hi Re, and Bol Na Halke Halke,
The audience was visibly moved during several ghazals, particularly “Tujhse Naraz Nahin Zindagi”, which drew emotional responses. Deepa Malhotra remarked, “This song brought back so many memories—what a beautiful performance!” Manoj Rathod, CEO of Arush Entertainment said, “The voices tonight have truly touched our hearts. This feels like a celebration of not just India, but love and life itself.” On the gazal ‘Hothon Se Choo Lo Tum’, Atul Wahi said “This reminded me of my youth days back in Punjab.”
The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Falguni Sukhadia, FIA’s Joint Secretary, who acknowledged the tireless efforts of the volunteers, the generous sponsors, and the support of the Advisory Board. She expressed gratitude to the many dignitaries for gracing the event. Special thanks are extended to photographers Jayanti Oza (Chicago News Photo-Journalist), Ramesh Punatar, Asian Media, and Matt Chennoor, whose work captured every memorable moment. The stage decor was done with a patriotic theme by Prasuna Moddasani, including set-up of photo booth based on Indian flag theme. Entire Tech team management and delivery was handled by Kamlesh Kapoor.
FIA’s Republic Day 2025 was not just an event but a powerful historic marker of unity, talent, and spirit of the Indian-American community. Under Founder and Chairman Sunil Shah’s dynamic leadership, the organization is poised for a fantastic year ahead with new FIA President and her team leading the charge. A big salute to all who made this celebration a resounding success!
