In a recent release of the Henley Passport Index 2025, India has seen a notable decline in its global passport ranking, slipping five spots to 85th place. This change highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Indian passport holders in terms of international travel freedom. As it stands, Indian citizens can access only 57 destinations without a visa, a number that places them on par with countries like Equatorial Guinea and Niger.

At the top of the index, Singapore continues to hold its prestigious position as the world’s most powerful passport. Singaporean citizens enjoy visa-free access to an impressive 195 destinations, maintaining their lead over other countries. Following closely behind is Japan, which ranks second with access to 193 destinations. Meanwhile, several European nations, including Germany, France, and Italy, share the third position with access to 192 destinations.

The Henley Passport Index is widely recognized for its comprehensive assessment of passport strength based on the number of destinations passport holders can visit without needing a visa. The decline in India’s ranking raises important questions about the implications for Indian travellers and the country’s diplomatic relations. The limited number of visa-free destinations can hinder business opportunities, tourism, and cultural exchange.

India’s passport ranking has experienced considerable fluctuations over the years. In 2006, it reached a high of 71st, but various factors—including geopolitical tensions, security concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic—have contributed to its decline.

In 2021, India’s ranking fell to 90th, largely due to travel restrictions during the height of the pandemic. Since then, while there have been some improvements in travel access as restrictions eased, the recent drop indicates that progress has not been sufficient to regain lost ground.

Moreover, as India continues to emerge as a significant player on the global stage—economically and politically—there is potential for increased collaboration with other nations that could enhance visa-free travel opportunities for Indian passport holders.
