New Leadership for 2025-26 at NAINA Takes Charge to Make a Difference

National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA), elected its new leadership for the term 2025-2026.  The election, a smooth process, followed the end of term of the governing board under President Suja Thomas of Albany, New York.

The incoming board members included Umamaheswari Venugopal (President) Dallas, Liffy Cherian (Executive Vice President) Dallas, Tara Shajan (Vice President) New York, Dr. Munira Wells (Secretary) New Jersey, Dr. Sheela Sajan (Treasurer) North Carolina in the Executive Board.

The governing body also consists of selected committee chairs for the term that includes, Binu Shajimon (Advance Practice Nurses (APRN), Usha Cherian (Advocacy & Policy), Maya Joseph (Awards & Scholarships), Siby Varughese (Bylaws), Rajitha Bommakanti (Communications), Nisha Mathews (Editorial), Elizabeth Sam (Elections), Saramma Ipe (Fund raising), Lyssy Alex (Membership), Vinciya Pandian (Research & Grants).

NAINA’s Advisory Board will consist of past presidents Suja Thomas (Advisory Chair), Dr. Lydia Albuquerque, Dr. Jackie Michael, Sara Gabriel, and Dr. Solymole Kuruvilla.

The new team, according to the incoming president Mrs. Venugopal will work with a vision of “Engage, Educate, and Empower” fostering a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and well-being to strengthen the Indian nursing community to create opportunities and pathways for nurses to grow personally and professionally, align with the emerging trends, meet the challenging healthcare demands, and advocate for policy changes. The president encourages all nurses to be change agents.

NAINA which was founded in 2006 with the goal of uniting all nurses and nursing students of Indian origin in the United States with one voice to increase visibility in the healthcare professional arena and to rejuvenate their unique cultural heritage and values. The organization currently has twenty-one chapters across the United States.

While being active as a minority ethnic organization, NAINA is an affiliate of American Nurses Association (ANA) that represents the four million nurses in the country and also partners with Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) to collaborate and advance the global healthcare workforce supporting healthcare transformation.

In addition to this, NAINA is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission (ANCC) that allows NAINA to offer educational programs to help nurses maintain and enhance their competencies, supporting their ongoing professional growth and commitment to excellence.

The new leadership takes charge as of January 1st to make a difference.
