Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history on December 23, 2024, by becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to attend Christmas celebrations at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) headquarters in New Delhi. This landmark event was marked by Modi’s heartfelt message emphasizing the teachings of Jesus Christ, which promote love, harmony, and brotherhood.
During his address, Modi called for collective efforts to strengthen these values in society, particularly in light of recent global violence, referencing tragic events like the Christmas market attack in Germany and the Sri Lanka Easter bombings. He urged unity against such threats, stating that only a human-centric approach could elevate society in the 21st century.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens in crises, recalling the emotional rescue of Father Alexis Prem Kumar from Afghanistan. His remarks resonated with attendees, including archbishops and bishops, who expressed gratitude for his presence at this significant occasion.
The CBCI event not only celebrated Christmas but also marked its 80th anniversary, showcasing the role of the Catholic Church in fostering interfaith dialogue and community welfare since its establishment in 1944. Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, CBCI president, welcomed Modi warmly, noting the importance of his visit for minority communities.
Modi’s participation included interactions with key Christian leaders and a tribute to Cardinal Oswald Gracias on his 80th birthday. The celebration featured spiritual hymns and songs, creating a serene atmosphere that reflected the spirit of Christmas.
In his Christmas greeting shared on social media, Modi extended wishes for peace and prosperity to all Indians and emphasized hope as a guiding principle for humanity. He expressed pride in India’s achievements over the past decade, including lifting millions out of poverty and advancing its economy.
This unprecedented visit underscores Modi’s commitment to inclusivity and dialogue with diverse communities within India. The event not only celebrated Christmas but also reinforced the message of unity and peace amidst challenges faced by society today.
