OTT platforms are reshaping cultural connections between India and Australia, particularly for immigrants navigating complex identities and societal challenges. The recent Australian-Indian series Four Years Later exemplifies this trend, addressing themes of immigration, racism, and mental health through its narrative.

Four Years Later follows the journey of Yash and Sri, a married couple separated for four years due to Yash’s medical training in Australia. Set in two different worlds India and Australia, the story unfolds when they reunite. The series highlights the immigrant experience, showcasing the struggles of adapting to a new culture while grappling with expectations from their families back home. Actor Akshay Ajit Singh, who portrays Yash, emphasizes that stories of immigration cannot ignore racism, which plays a significant role in the characters’ lives.

The show, which premiered on October 2 on SBS, reflects the growing collaboration between Indian and Australian entertainment sectors. It aims to tell modern stories that resonate with both cultures, fostering deeper connections. Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green noted that such narratives help bind the two nations closer together.

Racism is portrayed through Yash’s experiences at work, where he faces discrimination primarily due to his accent. In contrast, Sri’s character does not encounter overt racism in the episodes screened but navigates her identity as an Indian woman in Australia. The narrative also touches on issues like patriarchy and arranged marriages, reflecting the complexities of middle-class Indian families. Sri’s journey highlights her desire for autonomy and self-expression in a foreign land where she can explore her identity beyond familial obligations.

The show also subtly addresses mental health issues faced by immigrants. The emotional toll of separation and adaptation is palpable in Yash and Sri’s relationship. The positive reception of Four Years Later has sparked interest in releasing the series in India via OTT platforms, expanding its reach and impact.
