Mithun Chakraborty, one of the most celebrated actors in Indian cinema, is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award on October 8, 2024. This accolade, named after the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, is the highest honor bestowed in the Indian film industry and recognizes lifetime contributions to Indian cinema.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, who highlighted Chakraborty’s immense impact on Indian cinema over his illustrious career spanning nearly five decades.
Born Gourang Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, Mithun Chakraborty’s cinematic journey began in 1976 with the film Mrigayaa, directed by Mrinal Sen. His powerful performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, marking a significant milestone in his career. However, it was his role in the 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer that catapulted him to stardom. His iconic dance moves and memorable songs from the film, such as “I Am a Disco Dancer,” became an anthem for a generation.
Beyond acting, Mithun Chakraborty has made significant contributions to television and politics. He gained immense popularity as a judge on various dance reality shows, including Dance India Dance, where he showcased his passion for dance while mentoring aspiring dancers.
In addition to his entertainment career, Chakraborty ventured into politics, serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2016.
In response to the announcement of receiving this prestigious award, Mithun expressed his heartfelt gratitude: “I am dedicating this award to my family and fans across the world.”
