Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Chancery premises of the High Commission of India in Brunei on September 3, 2024. The event was marked by chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” from the enthusiastic Indian community members present at the inauguration.
During the ceremony, PM Modi lit a lamp and unveiled a plaque to officially open the new chancery complex. He also interacted with the Indian diaspora, who have made significant contributions to strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Brunei.
The Indian community in Brunei, numbering approximately 14,000, has been present in the country since the 1920s, with the first wave of arrivals coinciding with the discovery of oil. Indian doctors and teachers have played a crucial role in the growth and development of Brunei’s healthcare and education sectors, earning them widespread recognition and appreciation.
The new chancery complex is a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage, seamlessly blending traditional motifs and lush greenery. The use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones adds to the building’s aesthetic appeal, creating a harmonious balance between classic and contemporary elements.
This is the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. The historic visit of the Prime Minister coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei.
The new chancery premises serve as a symbol of India’s commitment to strengthening its presence and influence in the Southeast Asian region. As a key partner in the Indo-Pacific strategy, India’s engagement with Brunei holds strategic significance, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and regional security.
The inauguration of the new chancery building is a significant milestone in India’s diplomatic efforts and a testament to the growing importance of the India-Brunei relationship. It is expected to further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the High Commission in serving the interests of both countries and their citizens.
