Medicos Women Charity Organisation under the helm of Dr Dipti Jain, is appealing to people of conscience to join in a peaceful silent candle vigil across the world at many places on 22nd August 2024, to show solidarity for demand of justice against brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor, while she was on duty in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
Peaceful protests are being held in several cities in England, Scotland and Wales with Belfast and Dublin marching on over the weekend.
On the black day, 9th August 2024, the monstrosity of the worst imaginable crime shook our very being, corroded our conscience, made us ashamed as humans. A trainee female doctor was raped, tortured and murdered in the most gruesome way in R G Kar, a government hospital in Kolkata, whilst on duty. It shredded our last bit of patience to pieces and made our hearts cry out for JUSTICE – the only way we could have shown some semblance of respect to her departed soul and quenched our angst fuelled by this heinous incident. She bled at the hands of the perpetrators and writhed in pain. Our hearts are bleeding and wrenching now.
Medicos Women Charity Organisation under the helm of Dr Dipti Jain, worked tirelessly since the incident to protest against this abominable crime. We have received overwhelming support from the entire world, proving that the time has come to wake up, take notice, rise up above our individual interests and join hands in our endeavour of showing support and solidarity to the cause.
- A global vigil has been arranged to root for the cause of safety and security of women and justice for the deceased. Today, peace protests are being held in several cities in England, Scotland and Wales at the same time with Belfast and Dublin arranging theirs over the weekend. Global units have been involved in US, Canada and Australia, who are also holding peace vigils today, with the number of people physically attending this protest meet in UK being in excess of 1000.
- For those, who are not able to attend physically, arrangements are made for these voices across the globe to be able to reach out to the masses, by publishing their opinions and reflections in several regional and national newspapers, as a mark of collective power.
- Future generation of young medics from UK have been involved, by expressing their views and comments on BBC as the face of tomorrow and to carry the peace protests forward.
- The letters of condemnation from medical organisations like BMA, BAPIO, BPS and RCOG offers their valuable support to this movement, standing in solidarity for the cause and demanding justice.
- A digital protest tool has been set up to collect support from the whole cross section of the community which would be submitted to the Indian High Commission, Chief Minister, Prime minister and President of India.
With justice being still elusive, the need of the hour is to dredge out the rot from the system with relentless pursuit of the just demands, which are:
Justice for RG Kar
Unity for the sake of humanity instead of political anarchy marring the truth
Safety and security of women
Transparency at every stage of the investigation
Initiation of measures for woman empowerment and equality
Change of the judiciary system to reinstate faith in it
Exemplary punishment for the culprits
The conscience led peaceful protests would not stop unless justice has been meted out and appropriate legislations are in place to ensure safety and security of women, bringing about positive changes in the working environment for a better tomorrow.
