On April 20, 2024, Deepa Devasena and the Kathak Dance Collective will debut their majestic dance project Satrangi Re…Shades of Love at the prestigious Wortham Center in downtown Houston. Featuring a 12-member ensemble of skilled Kathak dancers, the performance will depict the unfolding of the life of Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh, through the prism of Sufi wisdom.
Using vibrant choreography blending traditional dance forms and contemporary composition—from intricate Kathak sequences to expressive storytelling through movement—the production invites audiences to immerse themselves in the richness of Indian history and the depth of Sufi philosophy. Brought alive through a lavish set illuminated by hundreds of candles, this cinematic odyssey promises to be a musical extravaganza and will leave audiences mesmerized.
The performance will be followed by workshops on April 21, conducted by Deepa Devasena in conjunction with Houston’s foremost dance exponents. This will be an excellent opportunity for the city’s young dancers to immerse themselves in the art of Natyashastra, the 4,000-year-old ancient Indian dance tradition while exploring the newest trends in Indian Classical dance. The workshops continue the Indo-American Association, IAA’s substantial recent efforts at partnering with local artists to build community engagement in popularizing Indian traditions among the young generation of Houstonians to preserve and promote the performing arts of the Indian subcontinent.
