New Jersey first lady Tammy Murphy announced that she’ll withdraw from the Democratic Senate primary, likely paving the way for Democratic Rep. Andy Kim, to secure the nomination for Democratic primary to be held on June 4.

The 41 year old is a former diplomat and a member of the Democratic Party. Kim is the first Democratic member of Congress of Korean descent.

“Tammy and I both agree that it is critical that we keep this seat, and the Senate, in Democratic control. Unity is vital. We will continue our efforts to strengthen our democracy in New Jersey while we come together to stand up against the dangerous agenda pushed by Trump. This race was never about Andy Kim vs. Tammy Murphy,” said Andy Kim.

Murphy and Kim both launched their campaigns for Senate in the fall, against Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez.

Kim further said, “The decision to run against Senator Menendez was one of the most consequential decisions of my life. The reason I stepped up is that I’m tired of constantly watching our politics fail our nation. We are just cycling from crisis to crisis, and too many politicians aren’t focused on what the American people need help with.

According to Kim, a staggering 84% of people in New Jersey believe NJ politicians are corrupt. The people of New Jersey deserve a choice for what kind of public servant they have in the Senate.

We need a fresh new start — a chance to lift up a new generation of leadership that can bring a new voice and deep public service experience to the US Senate, expressed Kim.

Menendez announced that he would not run in that primary but did not rule out seeking re-election as an independent as he faces federal corruption charges.
