In a suspected hate crime, a 29-year-old Sikh musician, was allegedly shot dead outside a gurdwara at Selma in the US state of Alabama. Raj Singh, also called Goldy, was a resident of Tanda Sahuwala village in Bijnor district of UP. He was a ‘ragi’ who was in the US with his musical group for over a year.
Goldy was shot by unidentified men when he was standing outside the gurdwara. His family was informed about the incident on Sunday.
“We were informed about the incident by relatives. It has been five days, and his post-mortem is yet to be done. We have reached out to the Gurdwara committee for more information, and they are helping us. We have also appealed to our government for justice and the arrest of the killers,” said Gurdeep Singh, the deceased’s brother-in-law, reported the Times of India.
As per the data recently released by the California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, the total number of hate crimes reported to police in the country’s 10 largest cities rose again in 2023.
Raj Singh’s murder is the second such incident in the region in February 2024. Earlier, an American hotelier of Gujarati origin, named Pravin Raojibhai Patel was shot dead after he got embroiled in a reported altercation with a man asking for a room in his motel in Alabama’s Sheffield area.
