Vice President, Kamala Harris has become the first woman to attend and deliver a commencement address at the graduation ceremony of the elite US Military Academy in West Point, New York on Saturday.
Harris, in her history-defining speech, elaborated on the aspects of global security and prosperity, highlighting America’s democratic ideals which inspire billions. A stable world is not possible without a strong America, she said. She is the first Indian American to hold the second highest office in US and address the cadets.
Cautioning the graduates that they were living in “an increasingly unsettled world where long-standing principles are at risk, Harris called Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine “an attack on international rules and norms that have served as the foundation of international security and prosperity for generations.”
She also criticized China for “modernizing its military and threatening both the freedom of the seas and rules of international commerce.”
“In the face of all these challenges, America plays a singular role of leadership,” Harris the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father told the graduates.
Harris was also the first woman to deliver a commencement address at the US Naval Academy, in 2021. Last year, she did the same at the graduation ceremony of US Coast Guard Academy.
