Opposition MPs on Thursday took out a ‘Tiranga March’ from Parliament to Vijay Chowk on the last day of the Budget session of Parliament in the national capital.

Congress leader KC Venugopal who participated in the march said, “The government itself is not letting the Parliament run. Why do they not want to discuss the Adani scam?” Proceedings of both houses of Parliament have witnessed repeated adjournments since the beginning of the Budget Session.

The march started after Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die following a protest by Opposition parties, who have been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Probe into the Adani stocks among other issues. The BJP has been demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in London.

Amid the stalemate in Parliament due to repeated adjournments, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor slammed the BJP-led Centre over the logjam and said that the objective behind the Tiranga Yatra is to send out the message that let’s protect and safeguard our democracy.

On Thursday, Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm while the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on the last day of the Budget Session of the Parliament following a protest by opposition MPs over various issues. While talking to mediapersons, Tharoor said, “I think this entire session has been a washout, shockingly it began with the ruling party actually saying that parliament should not allow functioning with the resumption of budget session for the first couple of weeks, disrupted by the treasury benches which has never happened in the history of parliament.”

But, BJP leader and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju slammed Congress MPs and other leaders for creating a ruckus in the House. “Again, Congress MPs and other opposition leaders created a ruckus in the House. The country is seeing what Congress is doing. Congress neither believes in the Constitution of India nor respects the law.”

Rijiju further stated that again Congress MPs and other opposition leaders created a ruckus in the House and insulted the Parliament by showing black flags. He further stated that Congress tried to create pressure on the judiciary in Surat court.”

But accusing the BJP of creating “disturbances” during the budget session of Parliament, which concluded on Thursday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the government did not want to discuss the Adani issue over which the opposition has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe.

Kharge, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said there is a vast difference in what BJP preaches about democracy and what it practices and alleged that opposition leaders were prevented from speaking in Parliament.

He also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleged that he is on tour during Parliament sessions. Kharge also took a dig at PM Modi over his launching trains, saying the task can be performed by other leaders.

Earlier, Parliament continued to witness disruptions over the opposition’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue with Coastal Aquaculture Authority (Amendment) Bill 2023 introduced in the Lok Sabha amid the din.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar rejected ‘point of order’ raised by Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s demand of an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in the United Kingdom. Goyal had not named Rahul Gandhi. The Chairman also established a new a new tradition by going completely paperless. He went digital to conduct the business of the House today, marking the beginning of a paperless tradition by the chair of the House.

BJD MP Sasmit Patra later lauded the initiative and called it a historic day. The two Houses were first adjourned till 2 pm and then for the day. The Coastal Aquaculture Authority (Amendment) Bill 2023 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Parshotaam Rupala amid opposition protests.
