He is one of the three people appointed to the NEC
Weeks after he was in the short list, Bharat Ramamurti was appointed a member of the economic council in US President-Elect Joe Biden’s cabinet. Ramamurti is currently the Managing Director of the Corporate Power program at the Roosevelt Institute and sits on the congressional commission overseeing Covid-19 relief funding.
Ramamurti will be one of the three new members of the National Economic Council (NEC), which coordinates domestic and international economic policymaking process for the administration. The other appointees are David Kamin and Joelle Gamble. Kamin is Deputy Director of the NEC. Gamble is Special Assistant to the US President for Economic Policy. Ramamurti will be Deputy Director of NEC for Financial Reform and Consumer Protection.
Reacting to the appointment, Ramamurti tweeted:
Earlier this month, Biden had tapped several centrists and progressives, including Ramamurti and Rohit Chopra, to work on a financial industry oversight transition plan. In April, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had appointed him to serve on the Congressional Oversight Commission for the CARES Act. Ramamurti, a Democrat, has also served as economic adviser to presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, who later dropped out of the race.
Ramamurti was born in Massachusetts, and is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School. He, his wife Paige Ammons, an attorney, and their child live in Boston.
