Global Indian Council Celebrates 77th Republic Day and Short Feature Film Launch

The Global Indian Council (GIC) celebrated India’s 77th Republic Day virtually with enthusiastic participation from members and dignitaries across the globe. The program reflected the spirit of unity, patriotism, and cultural pride that defines the Indian diaspora worldwide.

The event was gracefully anchored by EMCEE Komal Khatri, who once again showcased her exceptional skill in managing the entire program with elegance and professionalism.

The celebration began on a patriotic note with the Indian National Anthem rendered by Sabu Varghese and the American National Anthem by Emmanuel Varghese. Sabu Varghese, an accomplished mini-screen actor and singer, further energized the audience with soulful patriotic songs.

GIC was honored to have Prof. Dr. Ciza Thomas, Vice Chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Kerala, as the Chief Guest. She was warmly welcomed by Preethy George, who introduced her with pride as the Guest of Honor for India’s Republic Day celebration on behalf of GIC.

In her inspiring inaugural address, Dr. Ciza Thomas emphasized that Republic Day is not merely a date on the calendar, but a reminder of India’s democratic spirit and our collective responsibility to live as global citizens while spreading Indian values. She highlighted the principles of “We the People,” urged lifting others beyond borders, and reminded the audience of the enduring footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and India’s freedom fighters.

In his Presidential Address, GIC President PC Mathew wished everyone a Happiest Republic Day and emphasized the importance of democracy, diversity and unity. He also announced the release of GIC’s short feature film “The Foot Prints – Pairon ke Nishan,” inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. He shared insights into the journey of the production and the film’s synopsis, emphasizing the lasting impact of values-driven leadership.

Sudhir Nambiar, Global General Secretary, outlined the mission, vision, and future initiatives of GIC. He highlighted the success of the GIC Spelling Bee, GIC’s recent affiliation with the Indo American Press Club, and offering major share of the cash prize to conduct a global news writing contest online successfully.

Tara Shajan, Global Treasurer, delivered the felicitation address, followed by Associate Treasurer Tom George Kolath, who shared his felicitation remarks and delivered the vote of thanks.

Tom George Kolath, being the Chairman of the Center of Excellence – Red Carpet, appreciation was extended to Dr. Babu Raj (Producer), Prof.KP Mathew (Screenwriter), Thulasidas (Director), and the cast of The Foot Prints. When an ordinary man creates something extraordinary that becomes unique and special. A native of Alleppey, Mr. George who looks like Gandhiji had taken the major role as Mahathma Gandhi, gives an unforgettable image of our Father of the Nation, in the minds of the viewers.

GIC President PC Mathew portrayed the role of a Psychiatrist, while our Goodwill Ambassador Jija Hari Singh played a central character in the film.

GIC PR Sandy Mathew, joining virtually from Cochin, India, spoke on the importance of freedom, stating that Republic Day is not just an occasion but the soul of the nation. He reminded the audience that Indians abroad are ambassadors of India and custodians of its values.

Felicitation speeches were delivered by Adv. Susan Mathew (Jaipur) and Dr. Mohan Lumba, President of the Nairobi, Africa Chapter, who remarked that though one’s body and wealth may reside elsewhere, “the heart always remains in India.”

Representing regional chapters, Shaimi Jacob (New York Chapter) and Zanu Zack (Bangalore Chapter) highlighted India’s strength in medical science, IT, and artificial intelligence. Shaimi Jacob emphasized that India is not just a nation but an emotion, and that unity in diversity should remain India’s crown as the country moves forward.

Usha George, Chairperson of the Center of Excellence – Health & Wellness, delivered an encouraging felicitation speech, stressing unity, responsibility, and care for one another, as well as the duty to protect the Constitution.

Indu Jaiswal (Long Island) conveyed Republic Day wishes and appreciated GIC’s impactful initiatives.

Former Ambassador Srikumar Menon highlighted the sacrifices of India’s forefathers in securing the Constitution and freedom, urging everyone to uphold unity and dignity while working toward positive change.

Dr. Ajil Abdula (Calicut) shared his pride in India’s innovation, mentioning Astronaut Sunita Williams’ recent visit to Calicut, and expressed gratitude to GIC for his son’s success in the Spelling Bee competition.

Patricia Umashankar, Vice President of the Indo-American Press Club (IAPC), announced the results of the GIC–IAPC Online News Writing Competition 2026. The competition saw 39 registrations with 27 active participants, judged by a panel of journalists. The winners were:

Dyuthi Susan Zachariah – First Prize (INR 50,001)

Neba Anna Thomas – Second Prize (INR 30,001)

Subojith Chaudhury – Third Prize (INR 10,001)

She noted the high quality of entries and praised the younger generation for their strong journalistic ethics. She also appreciated GIC President PC Mathew and IAPC Vice Chairman Dr. Mathew Joys for their leadership.

Quoting Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Tom George Kolath reminded the audience: “Dreaming at night is not a dream. The dream is what you see during the day and implement.”

Concluding the celebration, President PC Mathew remarked, “Some names may fade away, but footprints remain forever.” The audience then witnessed the first official screening of GIC’s production, “The Foot Prints,” released on Republic Day by General Secretary Sudhir Nambiar.
