PM Modi hails Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech calling it “a watershed moment”

This Thursday, on September 11th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his X handle and shared the speech that Swami Vivekananda delivered in Chicago in 1893 at the World’s Parliament of Religions. PM Modi listed the speech amongst one of the most celebrated and inspiring moments in the country’s history.

Regarded as one of the most iconic and remarkable speeches, Swami Vivekanada’s speech presented India to the world at a time when it was under the rule of the British government. PM Modi stated that the speech pressed on harmony and global brotherhood and showcased the rich Indian culture to the entire world.

Sharing the speech, PM Modi wrote on X, “This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, is widely regarded as a watershed moment. Emphasising harmony and universal brotherhood, he passionately spoke about the ideals of Indian culture on the world stage. It is truly among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history.”

In his speech, Swami Vivekanand preached about religious tolerance and cried out to the world to put an end to fanaticism. He started the speech with the words that were not heard in formal addresses in those times – “Sisters and Brothers of America” – said Swami Vivekanand

Swamiji brought forward Hindu philosophy in front of the world which left the assembly in awe. He stated that he was proud to be Hindu as the religion teaches tolerance and universal acceptance. He called India a nation that has given shelter to people of all religions.

“I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth,” he said in a speech.
