After the sudden decision of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to vacate his post last month on July 21st, the Election Commission has announced today that the elections for the post of the Vice President of India will be held next month on September 9th.
The notification for this election will be issued coming Thursday, on August 7th and the last date to file for nomination papers will be August 21st. The results of the elections will be announced on the polling day itself i.e., September 9th as per the Election Commission.
Jagdeep Dhankar, on July 21st, announced that he will be stepping down from his post of Vice President. It shocked everybody as there were more than two years left till the end of his tenure which was supposed to end on August 10th, 2027. It was stated that officially he cited medical reasons as the reason behind his exited but sources hinted at different reasons.
There were some speculations that hinted that there has been a fall out of trust between him and the central government. Many believe that the breaking point might have come when Mr Dhankhar refused to stand with the government’s stand on the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma. So, when he stepped down as Vice-President there were a lot of questions raised on the reasoning.
Clause 2 of Article 68 of the Constitution states that an election should be held to fill a vacancy in the office of the Vice President occurring due to his death, resignation or removal, or otherwise, and it should be done “as soon as possible”. It also states that the elected person will be entitled to hold office “for the full term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office.”
