UNESCO grants world heritage site status to 12 Forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

It is a proud moment for Maharashtra and India as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has granted 12 forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj the World Heritage Site status. The forts being recognised globally is really a moment of pride for the state, the government informed

The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums under the Department of Cultural Affairs proposed UNESCO to grant these 12 forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, World Heritage Site status. Out of the 12 forts 11 are present in Maharashtra while 1 is present in Tamil Nadu. The forts include Raigad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohgad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, and Khanderi in Maharashtra, and Gingee in Tamil Nadu.

The CMO commented on the matter, saying, “These forts have been recognized for their outstanding universal value, including their military significance, architectural style, and cultural importance. The recognition is a testament to the bravery, architectural traditions, and Swarajya (self-rule) of Maharashtra.”

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar congratulated citizens of Maharashtra and stated how this is a very proud moment for the country. These forts were an integral part of the country’s history as they united people from different strata of society and helped Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s vision of “Hindavi Swarajya”.

The Deputy CM said, “This is a moment of pride and an historic occasion. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s vision of establishing “Hindavi Swarajya” (self-rule) was supported by these forts, these forts united people from various castes and communities to build a kingdom that prioritised the welfare of its citizens.”

The State government has reported that the Prime Minister’s Office selected the Maratha military architecture and sent the proposal to UNESCO. The state government also highlighted the contribution of architect Dr. Shikha Jain and Director of Archaeology Dr. Tejas Garge for receiving the UNESCO status.
