An earthquake struck in the Jhajjar district of Haryana, with tremors felt around Delhi and various different areas of the National Capital Region (NCR). As per the reports by the National Institute of Seismology, the depth of the earthquake felt in Jhajjar was around 10 kms, thus explaining the tremors faced in the capital.
It is being estimated that the magnitude of the earthquake was around 4.4 on the Richter scale, an instrument used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes. Although Jhajjar and Delhi are not particularly close by, the intensity of the earthquake was felt around several different areas of the capital.
It was reported that residents left their houses when they saw their fans and other household items trembling after the earthquake hit the region in the morning around 9:04 am. Even people in offices in Noida and Gurugram felt these tremors and stepped out of their buildings.
The earthquake was not only felt in Delhi, in fact tremors were felt around different cities in Haryana like Gurugram, Rohtak, Dadri and Bahadurgarh. The shocking aspect was that the tremors were so strong that even people in cities Meerut and Shamli in the western region of Uttar Pradesh felt the intensity of the earthquake despite being around 200 kms away from the epicentre in Jhajjar.
Delhi is very accustomed to earthquakes as it is situated in the Seismic Zone 4 which has a very high risk of earthquakes. As per the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), seismicity in north India, including the Himalayas, is due to the collision between the Indian tectonic plate with the Eurasian plate.
The DDMA has stated, “These colliding plates flex, storing energy like a spring, and when the plate’s margins finally slip to release energy, an earthquake results.”
