11 killed as bridge collapses in Vadodara

A tragic incident occurs as a section of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge in Padra taluka of Gujarat’s Vadodara collapsed this Wednesday on 9th July. The horrific incident saw 11 people losing their lives as many vehicles fell into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River with the bridge collapsing out of nowhere.

The Gambhira-Mujpur bridge situated in Padra taluka is a bridge that connects Anand district with Vadodara. As it was peak hours when the bridge collapsed there was heavy morning traffic and thus the tragic incident devoured so many lives. As per the reports, four vehicles, including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van, were crossing the bridge when it suddenly crumbled. There were 11 fatalities along with three people getting injured.

It was reported that fire brigade teams, local police and several members of the district administration immediately reported at the spot and began the rescue operations. Many locals also joined in to help the rescue team in their operations as they helped in extracting the injured from the falling bridge.

Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda posted on social media reporting about the incident. He wrote, “The main Gambhira bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara districts has collapsed. Many vehicles have fallen into the river, and major casualties are feared. The administration must immediately carry out rescue operations and arrange alternate routes for traffic.”

A local was asked about the bridge’s condition to which he revealed that the bridge has been notorious for the heavy traffic and many warnings were given about the poor condition of bridge. He said, “The Gambhira bridge has become notorious not just as a traffic hazard but also as a suicide point. Repeated warnings about its condition were ignored.”
